BT suspends SMS Self Service trial

The Register has a story about BT having to suspend their BT SMS Self Service facility:

The service – BT SMS Self Service – lets punters text BT to see when their phone bill was last paid or to find progress on a fault. BT began trialling the service last month as part of a new way for punters to stay in touch. Snag is, not only does the text service enable BT customers to find out about their own phone lines, it can let them snoop on the details of others.

Shame.  I imagine they’ll re-write it and bring it back with the required security as it is a wicked idea.  I can’t be bothered logging in via the rickety old BT.com website to check my bill… seriously the last time I did that it took ages for their back-end databases to process any pages whatsoever.  So a SMS self service facility — top idea.
