England World Cup football fans offered emergency text updates

Link: Guardian Unlimited Football | News | FO launches safety plan for England fans at World Cup.

The Football Supporters’ Federation has teamed up with T-Mobile to provide emergency information and advice via text messages. Fans should text ENGLAND to 07951 444444. Travel advice will be available by texting SOS WorldCup to 60999

For a moment, a wave of delight passed over me as I thought that this Guardian Unlimited article was stating that the UK Government was finally adopting the medium of text for useful occasions such as the World Cup.  Alas no.  It seems the service is offered by the Football Supporters’ Federation.  Good idea nonetheless.

  • Great idea. Of course it is not from the gov!
Same as here in Germany. The German government never uses any Text systems. It is not that popular, Germans are too reserved.

By the way: If any of you are thinking of visiting Germany.. Here is a non profit podcast on German culture and language. Even with a touch of comedy (as much comedy as two Germans can come up with…).
