More on the proposed Philippine SMS tax

Link: Philippine News — Manila Standard Today — Solons revive plan to impose text tax — may15_2006.

At least two members of Congress yesterday pushed for the imposition
of taxes on short messaging service (SMS) or text messages offered by
telecommunications firms in a bid to raise more funds for vital government
projects.
Reps. Joel Mayo Almario of Davao Oriental and Mark Cojuangco of Tarlac
said taxing SMS should not hurt end users.
Instead of taxing all text messages being sent by cellphone subscribers,
Almario proposed to tax those that are based on games, surveys, and
gambling.

So now it’s not the actual SMS messages that they’re looking to tax but additional add-ons like games, surveys and gambling? Hmm. A little while on there’s more about this hair-brained scheme. I doubt it will be very popular at all.
