Deaf PA system sends alerts by text

Link: BBC NEWS | Technology | Deaf to ‘hear’ PA system on phone.

A group of research students at IBM has developed a system to make public announcements available to people on a mobile phone.

Called LAMA, the service was originally conceived to improve communications for deaf people.

Its designers hope that it will soon be in use in busy public places like airports, railway stations and hospitals.

Well just when I was about to write a post about the ridiculous state of mobile innovation here in the UK, this story arrives on the BBC. Excellent.

One Response to “Deaf PA system sends alerts by text”

  • I’m profoundly deaf and one of my biggest frustrations when using public transport is tannoy announcements. The number of times I’ve missed the train, or taken the wrong train etc is too many to count. So this would be a step in the right direction.
