MoPay International launches mobile banking in Rwanda

Link: allAfrica.com: Rwanda: Rwanda Firm Starts Phone Banking

Mobile Payments (MoPay) International and Publicell, a Rwandan ICT company, have clinched a partnership deal that would see them provide a mobile payment system that would enable banks, telecom operators, bill issuing companies and various merchants allow their customers to use mobile phones or computers to order and pay for goods and services.

So, they’ve got it in Rwanda, and we don’t really have it here in the UK? How annoying!

  • Did you see the Economist article on this in South Africa.?..this is where I believe we start seeing the power of the handset http://www.economist.com/finance/displaystory.cfm?story_id=8089667

We do have the beginnings of this in the UK with the MONILINK service…ok its information led at the moment but the possibilities of the service are pretty clear….their power is in the direct relationships they have with the banks - which is the fall down of some of the SMS payment services in the UK…as a wise man once said - KISS - and all of us in the industry know that any usability testing shows that consumers have extremaly limited patience with mobile services..
