Cat & Pigeons: What if News Corp bought Three UK?

Oh I’d like to see that. Can you imagine a big proper media group buying Three UK? I think I’d have kittens if something like that took place. Check out Steve’s comment made on this post earlier today:

oh nooooooo. I’ve just marked 3uk 10/10 on Ewan’s ranking screen, as their bigplan is starting to become clearer in my head and it looks good. and then the party is spoilt by this…or is it…..maybe they actually deserve 11 out of 10…

…lets throw in an idea to really stir it up. Do people think it would be better if (and of course it is an if) another network operator bought them, or lets say a media company snuck in there such as EMI, Sony, Virgin, HMV, Apple, ITV, Murdoch,…you get the idea…??? The emphasise being on creating a global mega-branded mobile-play based primarily around music, video, tv and general media/newmedia fun.

So basically taking what 3 have given us in their recent visionary announcement and letting a big play media company take it onwards and upwards to the next stage. Their x-series announcement was basically a way of saying to lots of big media companies ‘hey, we’ve got 3 this far but aren’t big enough to take it to the next stage but here is a vision of what it could be…so who’s up for buying the vision and making 3 the next global mega-branded mobile media company?”…

just a thought…

  1. I think its what Richard Branson wants to do with NTL (VirginTV) hence them trying to Buy ITV etc Virgin The Brand is doing quite well in The States as well having just had their first V festival over there.

  2. This would indeed be interesting. But my question would be if a big media brand wants into mobile in a big way would they not go the MVNO route rather than have the hassle of running a network?

However as the fall of Easy and Disney pulling out of their planned launch in the UK shows, the MVNO route is not for the faint hearted.

So maybe a alternative thought is an MVNO with a customer base could be created with the network assets sold on to another op to manage?

  3. “the hassle of running a network”!? To the likes of some of the News Corp style companies, this would just be a mere department. and buying up the likes of 3 to create that department would come out of petty cash.

This is one of those things where you look at 3 and think “wow, big fish!”…but then swimming along behind is an even bigger fish…
