Truphone, spoke too soon
I think I need to upgrade my Nokia E61 firmware as explained on the Truphone site.
I visited the Nokia Software Update page. For some arse reason, you can ONLY update your E61 if you’re on a PC. Which. I. Am. Not.
I will use my old PC tonight. Then hopefully be up and running with Truphone!

I have heard a couple of times about people with problems on the PR1 to PR2 upgrade, maybe http://www.mobilevoipforum.org has a couple of hints. However the truphone guys are extremely helpful and also do a like for like replacement. Email support@truphone.com ;; the best customer experience I ever had. I use it on nokia e60 and have made 64 hours of calls at an everage per minute price of 4.7 pence, this includes landline globally, mobile everywhere — I used to average 25 pence on my previous Mobile Network Operator post pay plan;;;

The comment above is correct: there were reports of some handsets refusing to ‘accept’ Nokia’s own firmware upgrade - contact Nokia for a workaround, or support@truphone.com will also be able to give you advice.

PS. Remember to backup your phone before you start: the firmware upgrade will wipe it!
