UK citizens offered health advice by SMS

Link: webitpr | New Service Offers Joe Public Health Advice via SMS

Launched today, and the first service of its kind, ‘Health-SMS’ utilises the power and popularity of SMS text messaging to help raise the awareness and understanding of health issues amongst the general public.
The information and communication service for NHS Trusts is provided by 123 Consultants and Clickatell, the world’s leading messaging provider. The service allows subscribers to access a wealth of health information via text message. Users can create their own profile by filling out an online questionnaire focused on common health issues; subscribers will then receive information and advice via SMS on health issues pertinent to their profile, for example, drinking or smoking.
Alternatively, users can text a particular keyword to receive information on a range of topics such as obesity, safe sex or even the contact details for a 24 hour pharmacy. Members will also benefit from free text messages and ring tones as part of the offering.

This is pretty nifty! I’d like to see more two-way services between nurses/medical experts and teenagers in particular.

  • oh Monsieur MacLeod, you spoil us!! Where do we even start with pulling this little one apart. I have never ever come across something so pointlessly ridiculous and ridiculously pointless. And to think that my tax is paying for it. Oh I need a large pot of coffeee before I even begin going to work on this lovely little nugget ;-)

I am sorry but the NHS should be about doctors, nurses, GP’s, chemists and other real living people who offer caring services to the ill in a face to face situation.

Texting “I’m fat, what is the best diet” or “is it true that I can catch herpies from toilet seats” to 60300 is just friggin nuts. Or signing up as an 18yr old lad and then the “smart system” sends me an appropriate text at 10:30pm on a Friday night saying “don’t forget to go and buy a pack of condoms before you take her home”. Oh p-lease…no sorry this is not the direction society should be going in…
