Mobile users New Year’s performance expectations: Networks Can’t Cope

Link: People beat SMS rush-India-NEWS-The Times of India

But as the week progressed, it was apparent that people had chosen to beat ‘rush hour’ by texting their greetings much in advance.

This is completely embarrassing.

Not nearly chuckle-level embarrassing. It’s all out 150% vomit enducing embarrassment.

How bad does your service have to be when users readily plan to send their New Year’s greetings — that is, PAY STUPID AMOUNTS FOR 160 CHARACTERS — days the turn of midnight on December 31st?

The very fact that users KNOW the service will be shit is appalling. As was commented on SMS Text News recently, the mobile networks around the planet have had sufficient time — almost a decade in most cases, to get to grips with high traffic demands.

And if they couldn’t normally be arsed, you’d think that the revenue potential — all those 10p and 12p messages — is worth a look.

I don’t know where to go with this viewpoint. Do you resolve it by explaining to yourself that ‘there are technical limitations on the network, and, you know, they’re only contracted to provide a ‘commercially reasonable’ service — and even when you’ve been charged your 12p for sending yoru text, there is no service level guarantee…. so just sit down and shut it.’

OR do you resolve it by shaking your head and thinking, ‘Your expectations are way too high, Ewan’?

Leave it. Time for another Irn Bru.
