Another MVNO for the UK on the horizon? Oh PLEASE SAVE ME

I don’t quite think I can take yet another MVNO waltzing into the UK marketplace and doing it ALL WRONG.

Have you heard the rumours?

I’ve heard four specific rumours — one from a highly placed person in a mobile operator — indicating that there’s a new MVNO heading this way with, frankly, a ridiculous proposition. I don’t know how in the world they’re going to sell it to anyone but a granny, her husband and their dog.

I’m not talking about Blyk, by the way — they, I think, at least have a chance — I really am warming to the idea of add funded mobile services. No, I’m talking about another one.

Shocker.

When I can find a website or more information, I’ll publish it.

To be clear: I’m up for more competition, innovation and the like, so if you’re thinking of doing an MVNO in that context, excellent, come in, come in, sit down, relax, tell us about yourself.

If you’re just-another-arse with a half-hearted mumbled offering, no thank you.

  • There’s quite a few of them on the horizon or in planning. Are we talking about a low cost operator?

  • Well I can’t quite be sure if these rumours are low cost. It doesn’t sound low cost to me.

Forget low cost. We’ve already got low cost, haven’t we? Fresh Mobile. Tesco Mobile. Yeah there’s a few high rates — mobile to mobile, for example, but really, if you’re going to do something interesting, make it free. Otherwise, why should anyone bother changing?

  • Ditto TomTom - which I love as its a Machine to Machine MVNO rathare than Customer to Customer.

Not convinced that it requires a MVNO though…

  • A couple of years ago the MVNO movement was predicted as something that would revolutionize the industry. Frankly apart from Virgin, it’s all been very dissapointing so far. Disney, easy and others have tried and failed.

I’m interested to see how Blyk will fare.
