The grapevine says News International UK is dumping telco suppliers

I had an anonymous tip in from a source that I know and trust who’s heard tell on the grapevine that…

News International (that’s the Sun and the News of the World) are rationalising their procurement process drastically including reducing the number of current suppliers to the business. I wonder if that will have an effect on how they do mobile and telecoms business and how far they’ll push on margin? The changes begin in earnest in May.

Well I wonder.

I wonder, in fact, if this is becoming a more regular feature across the industry with big traffic pushers rationalising their traffic into one or two sources to a) buy in bulk and b) demand better rates? Makes sense. Not so good if you’re one of the smaller companies unable or unwilling to cut your rates though.

  • I doubt they’ll be changing much in the way of SMS/MMS/Wap service provision. The cogs run pretty slickly as it is, and if it ain’t broke..
