Channel 4 could axe Big Brother SMS voting

According to Digital Spy, UK broadcaster Channel 4 is reviewing the SMS voting process in popular reality show Big Brother, following a number of recent scandals and problems involving TV shows and premium SMS.

The eighth series of the show begins later this month, and although no announcement has been made as yet, rumours are also abound that premium rate phone line voting may also be axed in an attempt to win back viewer trust after recent problems with other shows on the channel, such as Richard & Judy.

  • hmm, given that Virgin Media are the new BB sponsor, and C4’s ad revenue has dropped by 70% this year, I don’t imagine C4 will be super keen to drop text voting.

  • sounds like we will have to find another way to get rid of the hopeful tattoed Piscean from Darlington who wants to be a stand-up comic, maybe the mob should be allowed access to the house themselves to forceably tear out the desired housemate?

  • We have had similar problems in Australia with voting and attribution of earnings for Dancing with the Stars.

Other than prominent stars of that channel who are going on to host a follow-on series etc, winning all but one time, there has also been outrage at the small amounts given to charities (voters are told money from their premium SMS votes goes to charity). Some of the amounts have been appallingly small.

Sadly this gives SMS voting a poor reputation
