Sony Ericsson launches new P1 smart phone

Having had a P800, P900 and the P910, I was interested to see Sony Ericsson have reset the counter, so to speak, and just announced the new P1 smart phone.
It runs Symbian UIQ, as per previous P-series phones, and comes with a neat little stylus to control the touch screen - which you’ll inevitably end up losing at some point in the handsets life. Still, it’s a lot smaller than it’s predecessor the P990 (about three-quarters the size), and manages to pack Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, tri-band GSM/GPRS and UTMS 3G, plus a 3.2 megapixel 3x digital zoom camera into it’s sleak candybar-style package.
The Sony Ericsson P1 is expected to go on sale worldwide in Q3 of this year, so once you’ve taken into account network approval and launch dates, this could be ready in time to be a contender for many a phone addicts Christmas stocking.

I used to be a big proponent of Sony Ericsson devices but my faith in their technology was destroyed by the P990. That device just should not have been released to the general public with the initial firmware version. Ok, most of the bugs were fixed in a subsequent release BUT they never addressed the user interface shortcomings. Fundamentally, the device is difficult to use.
The lack of HSDPA in the P1 is a curious omission. If this is a high end smart phone, then surely such bearers should be present…

Posted by Darren on May 10th, 2007 at 11:13 am.Ive had the p800,p900,p910 and now the p990 and must say its the best one yet. yes the initial firmware was terrible, but the p800 wasnt much better when it came out! the p990 firmware has improved greatly since then. ive no problems with the user interface, the keyboard is just about right and makes txts an emails very easy indeed. The new P1 looks very interesting and the smaller size is welcome. has a similar look to the M600. altho as darren has pointed out, its not particularly attractive. maybe if it didnt have the black bit and was completely grey/silver, i think that would drastically improve its appearance.
