‘Carrier is dial tone’
Fred at A VC is very happy with his Blackberry Curve — apart from the battery. That, for me, is deal breaker. If the handset can’t even get half way through the day without a charge, it’s useless. Plain useless.
So I’m using Nokia at the moment
Anyway Fred signed off with a super comment…

I don’t want my carrier and my phone connected in any way. Carrier is dial tone. Phone is functionlity. That’s the way it should be and will be some day.
Firmly agree. Most carriers certainly don’t though!

The reason that carriers don’t want to be just a dial-tone is because that forces them to focus on the expensive part of their business - the infrastructure.
If they can’t hawk phones and overpriced ringtones, they’re going to have to actually focus on quality of service and reliability, and network features such as better voicemail and whatnot.
