Consultants used to talk to one another as they waited to give presentations; now they spend that time doing e-mail. Those who once bonded during limousine rides to airports now spend this time on their BlackBerrys. Some say they are making better use of their “downtime,” but they argue their point without conviction. This waiting time and going-to-the-airport time was never downtime; it was work time. It was precious time when far-flung global teams solidified relationships and refined ideas.
I enjoyed reading this commentary on mobile business — in particular, the above paragraph resonated. Although, I rarely ever respond to email in front of anyone. I do actually enjoy interacting with people manually! But when I’m in a taxi from airport to hotel, for example, I will often check and respond to email.. just to kill time unless there’s some spectacular scenery.
If you’ve got a few minutes, the article’s worth a look.

People have forgotten what down time means. It is a time to call you girlfriend and tell her you love her. Or think about what colour to paint the bathroom. Or as you said, to sit back and watch the scenery roll by.
Society is heading towards major burnout as we insist on filling every single void in our lives with work or work related tasks.
A very interesting article on the BBC today about mental illness, including stress now being the largest reason for staff taking time off work… http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6717573.stm
