Sony Ericsson W960 – the iPhone killer?

Link: Review: Sony Ericsson W960 (MobileBurn)

Following on from the post about new Sony Ericsson handsets the other day, MobileBurn have got the goss on the ‘iPhone killer’ W960 walkman phone.

Sony Ericsson has announced the new W960 Walkman handset in a barrage of handset announcements from Berlin today. Packing the Symbian/UIQ smartphone UI combination, the Sony Ericsson W960 is the evolution and coming of age of the manufacturer’s Walkman range.

Similar to Apple’s iPhone, the Sony Ericsson W960 sports 8GB of on board memory and a 2.6″ 262k color, QVGA resolution touch screen display. This means up to 700 albums worth of music can be stored on the device and navigated with the new Walkman Touch player. Bluetooth with A2DP stereo headset support is also included to allow wireless enjoyment of your music. Sony Ericsson’s TrackID feature has also been beefed up in the latest Walkman range, with detailed information on artists and albums being delivered with the touch of a button.

And it’s 3G too, unlike the iPhone. And does MMS, unlike the iPhone. And is available on most networks or unlocked with no contract, unlike the iPhone. It has a proper keyboard, unlike the iPhone. I won’t go on comparing the two, but it’s clear Apple have got a few challengers in the market.

(Thanks to elchapo for correcting my earlier mistake over the iPhone’s Wifi capability!)

But… music and the iPhone works brilliantly. I’m willing to bet that music and the Sony is a total, total arse compared.

I had a plugin for iTunes a while back that synced to my N80 just like an iPod. It’s all in the software.. :)

It does sound like more than the match of the iPhone. Having 3G should make a big difference. Dunno if it was a typo but I believe the iPhone does have Wi-Fi. Perhaps that means both will have patchy battery life.

Apologies elchapo, my mistake re: the Wi-Fi. Have corrected it now, but also come up with a couple of things it can do that the iPhone can’t. Honestly, I’d like to see the iPhone do well, but it’s not going to have an easy run from everything I see at the moment.

The W960 also has a better camera and it can take video unlike the iphone. You can also download music to it from Gracenote and since the Symbian OS has already been around for a while it will have more applications available at its launch. Buyaka iphone buyaka
