41,000 Indians use bus schedule beta text system

Very cool indeed!

The Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation’s cellphone timetable service seems to have got hits even from abroad, considering the huge NRG settlers who use this service when home.

As a pilot test, the project was taken up in a part of the state where nearly 41,000 people used the service. Three of these requests for bus services, came from phone numbers in the UK and 306 from other states in India.

I’d use this if I could find something similar in the UK. Instead I have to regularly sit and stare into space waiting for a 205 to arrive…

It is actually available (somewhat) in the UK by Traveline, but is rather limited in it’s coverage and costs 25p per text in addition to one’s normal messaging charges.

Flick — thanks for this — I think I might have read about it ages ago. I’m always hugely discouraged when I see a 25p charge — as that adds up to 35p once you’ve taken into account the ‘standard network rate’ message… 35p still annoys me :|
