iPhone unlocking is dangerous, says Apple

This came in this morning from Apple..

Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone’s software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed. Apple plans to release the next iPhone software update, containing many new features including the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store (www.itunes.com), later this week.

Apple strongly discourages users from installing unauthorized unlocking programs on their iPhones. Users who make unauthorized modifications to the software on their iPhone violate their iPhone software license agreement and void their warranty. The permanent inability to use an iPhone due to installing unlocking software is not covered under the iPhone’s warranty.

I could add my thoughts, but I’d rather hear yours – and I’m sure there’s plenty of opinion on this 🙂

  1. I suppose they could, with a software update, detect any hacked phones and render them inoperable which would protect their deals with O2 and Orange etc but would they actually do that?

  2. I remember when I was a kid the local priest always warned me about masturbation the same way. I think the company line was:

“The Catholic Church strongly discourages users from messing with their own kit. Users who make unauthorized use of their software could violate their license agreement and void their ability to see the big fella in the next life”.

Strange how fear is always the only tactic available. Something a little more creative please. It would be nice to see them use a little humour.

On a related note… we at MAXroam are going to miss our launch deadline today so by way of apology we are going to give away an unlocked iPhone with a MAXroam SIM to one of the people who buy it from the website this coming Thursday. Use it at your peril 😉
