Link: Nokia taunts Apple lockware phone with posters for “open” N-series - Boing Boing

Nokia is plastering NYC (and elsewhere?) with cheeky ads taking aim at Apple’s locked iPhones.

Cory over at BoingBoing caught this story via Gizmodo (I think that’s where the picture came from too).

He documents Nokia’s current flypost poster strategy. Their posters contain the statements ‘Phones should be open to anything’ and ‘The best devices have no limits’.

Fair points if you’re sat there with a 18-month contract from AT&T and a locked iPhone.

I’m not so sure Nokia should be casting much light on their devices of late though. The iPhone makes most of Nokia’s handsets look reaaaaally old, reaaaaaally quickly. The N95 (which Cory from Boing Boing is considering acquiring) is positively ancient in comparison.

I’m looking forward to seeing what Nokia pull out of the bag. I hope the iPhone has delivered a short, sharp shock to the mobile manufacturers of this world. We shall soon find out.

  1. I love this poster. I need a copy for my apt door.
Wonder if I can get this as an ad on MMM, would be kinda neat.

  2. @Antoine - if you get one, can you get two?

  3. I have to give it to Nokia, it’s a well-deserved tease.

However, I’m in agreement with you, Ewan, they shouldn’t move the spotlight onto their phones. I’ve got the N95 as everyday phone and occasionally use the (locked) office iPhone to browse stuff on wifi. There’s a very deep canyon of differences in terms of user experience and use.

    S60’s openness + iPhone’s usability = a very happy me
