I so want an iPhone but the 18 month contract with O2 is such a killer for me. I know a lot of other people in the same position. I know Apple are supposed to be brilliant marketeers but I wonder if they have misjudged this one to a certain extent. Are higher margins so important at the expense of a vastly reduced market share. Although this might be true in certain cases, my very dim and distant recollection of economics classes conjures up memories of demand elasticities and the like. Maybe Apple are just in love with the idea of single digit market shares in every product class they enter. This iPhoneunlocked offer looks great for some but I would still be forced into a network I dont want or use with all the disadvantges that entails. It is so strange to be in the position where I want to buy something and have the money to do so but can’t because the seller wants to impose extra conditions not unlike, say, Dell requiring me to select BT as my ISP when I buy a computer. As exciting and forward thinking as new technology can be, there is an irony ithat the new companies that champion these developments can often seem so byzantine in their approach to new customers.
