The FCC has released lists of the applicants for the upcoming 700MHz auction, to take place in January. The auction is for blocks of the 700MHz frequency that will be vacated as the United States moves to mandated digital TV broadcasts.
Interestingly enough, there are 2 lists. The first list is companies that have submitted [...]
Over at the Financial Times, they’ve got some dirt that Wired editor-in-chief Chris Anderson has been added to the Disgustingly High Roaming Bills rank, thanks to his trusty iPhone. Seems that on a recent foreign trip, Anderson had his iPhone powered on in his pocket, and forgot to disable the email app, which was connecting [...]
Continue ReadingThe biggest downside to all these latest fancy handsets is that there is limited space for power. Typically the mobiles with the most killer feature set offer the worst battery life. After all, there’s more on the phone to drain that battery. Researchers have spent years trying to come up with a new battery technology [...]
Continue ReadingWord on the street is that AT&T Wireless will launch their MediaFLO-powered mobile TV service in the States ‘as early as possible’ in 2008. Launching with 8 channels - ESPN, MTV, NBC, CBS, and Fox among them, the service has apparently been testing really well. A slight delay is necessary to optimize the user experience, [...]
Continue ReadingThis week, Whatley’s having a look at the Mobile Web, the ‘m.’ solution and web to mobile rendering engines.
Ok – on the back of yesterday’s announcement of the new Mobile Pownce (http://m.pownce.com) site, I thought I’d tackle a subject this week that I (along with quite a few others I suspect) have quite strong [...]

Well I’m not too sure I agree with this viewpoint. The iPhone isn’t like your common-or-garden pay-as-you-go Samsung, hardwired with a particular interface. The iPhone can be updated in a jiffy — and what’s more, the infrastructure is in place thanks to [...]
I’m sure Avaya aren’t the only ones thinking about this. Enabling the iPhone for use within companies’ own IP telecommunications networks s very employee-friendly. No doubt enterprise IT managers may well have issues about enabling such a fancy, snazzy device (unless they each get one).

Vir2, a provider of SMS marketing and fundraising solutions for charities, has welcomed the decision by UK politican, Mark Oaten MP to file an Early Day Motion calling upon the Government to stop charging VAT (sales tax) on UK charity donations made [...]
International low cost calls service, RebTel has been visited by Santa and the elves all bearing a 3x multiplier.
For first-time payments, RebTel will treble your credit. So, if you add $10, they’ll credit your account with $30. Might be quite useful if you’re planning some international calls this Christmas.
I need to [...]
Pity the stressed 25-year old student in Singapore who was so wound up that he was moved to shooting upskirt video footage. This week he was jailed for two weeks as punishment — so reports the Straits Times.
Tang Wee Min shot the video clip while on an escalator at Jurong Point shopping mall on March [...]
Verizon Wireless has teamed up with the NCAA to be able to offer full coverage of the 2008 college bowl games to subscribers of their MediaFLO-powered VCAST Mobile TV service. Starting with the Poinsetta Bowl on December 20th and going through to the GMAC Bowl on January 6th, Verizon VCAST Mobile TV customers can tune [...]
Continue ReadingSprint Nextel today announced that they have chosen a replacement for Gary Forsee, who stepped down in October of this year. Daniel R. Hesse will be taking the helm as President and CEO of Sprint Nextel, effective immediately. Hesse has served in the same position at Sprint spin-off Embarq Corporation, and also has over 2 [...]
Continue ReadingPownce, the micro-social-blogging site launched by Digg.com founder Kevin Rose, has launched its mobile site, mobile.pownce.com. The site is optimized for mobile browsers (apparently it even looks killer on the iPhone, perhaps someone can confirm this for us) and allows you to do most everything on your phone that you can with a PC browser. [...]
Continue ReadingM:Metrics recently conducted a survey of 625 mobile phone users, trying to get a grasp on where mobile phone users are most receptive to ads on their mobiles. The study was commissioned by digital SIDEBAR, a company that specializes in mobile advertising and digital content.
The key purpose of the study was to determine what [...]
I received an interesting press release today, I suppose it’s from Network Appliance, though it wasn’t explicitly from them. The gist of it was the results of a study conducted by Network Appliance among 2,035 online adults, who were asked questions relating to the types of digital data that they have, as well as their [...]
Continue ReadingI hope that won’t screw up my 3UK service. I’ve been a lot happier and more content with service via 3UK than I have with T-Mobile. Although I do thoroughly appreciate T-Mobile leading the marketplace by being the first to launch unlimited data. As for an acquisition, well, each Hutchison geographic territory [...]

I’ve been meaning to post a formalised announcement of my arrival in San Francisco. I keep on surprising people who call expecting to find me in London.
I’m here in the centre of the Universe until the end of February to see what’s going on in the mobile industry. If you’re doing something hot [...]
Apple iPhone sales are second only to Blackberry in the context of smartphones in North America. So reports Canalys as detailed at Computerworld.
Blackberry don’t have anything to worry about in the short term, I don’t think…

I’ve been thinking carefully about whether to go to Mobile World Congress.
Part of me thinks it’s important to be there and to see what’s going on. Part of me reckons it’s a total, 100% waste of time and energy.
Last year I was not impressed to find that 3GSM had banned bloggers. [...]
I was walking through the Westfield Mall here in San Francisco when I came across a high-end watch place by the name of Tourneau. This is, apparently, the place to buy Vertu mobile handsets - as I was about to find out. I had a peer in the window and went about with [...]
Continue ReadingGreg over at Mobivity has created a survey asking how you track your mobile web traffic and perform analysis.
If you’ve got a moment, take the survey. I’m looking forward to seeing the results. I reckon most people are doing manual stats (i.e. tracking logs on mobile. or m. sites) or not at [...]
Social networks are cool and all, but they’re typically little more than a virtual world, like Second Life, where the interaction with the real world is often limited. BuzzD is a new social networking/local search service that’s aiming to change that. Launching this week in partnership with Flavorpill, a website offering localised cultural events listings. [...]
Continue ReadingMAXroam (SMStextnews sponsor) has announced their ‘Roaming Mad’ story competition, which rewards consumers for sharing their horror stories of high roaming rates. The MAXroam SIM, recently launched by Cubic Telecom, is a borderless SIM card offering significantly lower roaming rates. The MAXroam SIM also eliminates the hassle of getting a local SIM and trying to [...]
Continue ReadingI stumbled on this post by Stuart Henshall and couldn’t resist sharing. Stuart recently had his car broken into and the thieves stole his stereo. To replace it, he chose the Sony MEX-BT2500, which retails for under $200 USD. What’s so cool about this stereo?
It’s got Bluetooth.
For less than his phone cost, Stuart [...]

They’ve hooked up with Spinvox to bring speech-to-text technology to their voicemail system. The new service, Voice2TXT, is available today to all Alltel subscribers, and is compatible with any phone capable of receiving an SMS.
Voice2TXT uses [...]
