Fido, getting a touch more annoying.

So my Fido bill comes today. Nothing new, this happens monthly. And I open it as usual, looking annoyingly at how much I have to pay to simply have my email sent to my phone. (ooh $25 a month for 7MB, bargain!) and long distance (almost $8 for a 30 min call to my mom, who’s about 100 km away) but wait, today there’s more!

IMPORTANT NOTICE: PRICING MODIFICATIONS TO YOUR FIDO SERVICE

ooh are you going to start charging me something sensible?

I read on…

TEXT MESSAGING SERVICE

Please note that effective March 4, 2008, the rate for sending a text message from Canada to international wireless numbers is changing to $0.25 (from $0.20)

oh goody. Thanks. Just what I wanted, to pay you more to text my friends in the UK.

The rate for sending a text message while roaming in the United States is changing to $0.60 (from $0.40). Text messages sent while roaming are not included in any text messaging option.

Well thanks.

I won’t even bore you with the increase in the Call Display and Voice Messaging, and the Directory Assistance.

  • ouch, very ouch. you should get yourself an n-series with wifi and place all your international calls/txts via Truphone. i’ve been using it for months (they’ve had a gimic with free calls to 40 countries for a while now, but its almost over) and i can say that the service is phenominal.

$0.15 per txt msg - to anywhere in the world
cost per minute for calling? i dont know yet. after using for about 7 months i havent paid for a phone call yet. you can see pricing for some destinations that aren’t part of the free calling gimic on their website, but i haven’t called those places (and its likely the places you want to call are still freebies until the end of february).

oh, and the voice quality: it sounds EXACTLY like i’ve placed the call over my GSM service. battery life? i put the phone in ‘offline’ mode, then explicitly connect via wifi from work. i’m convinced that doing this i actually get MORE USE out of a charge than if i used the gsm radio.

personally, i’m planning to switch to another carrier because i dont use my airtime minutes anymore. currently i’m on AT&T and their cheapest plan is $40 - but i never use more than 100 minutes in a month on GSM (i talk a LOT over wifi though). T-Mobile here i come :)
