Lord, won’t you buy me an 8 megapixel Nokia?

Back in December, Nokiageek posted this, via Unwiredview and, well, in the Christmas travel rush, I negated to post anything about it. I wanted to document that this is the kind of innovation I hope to see from Nokia. True next generation improvements, not re-badged N73s or N95s. If Nokia are able to continue to deliver phenomenal 6, 8 or 10 megapixel on-board cameras of the quality that the N95 has trailblazed, together with improved interfaces… well… I’m going to lap it up. We really do need something in the marketplace as a mass-consumer counter to the Apple iPhone. Bring it, Nokia, Bring it!

Unwiredview.com have unearthed a very interesting patent application from Nokia and quite frankly I’m so excited I’m vaguely aroused.

  • Gaaa - megapixels do not a great camera make.

The rust of willy-waving around 10MP digicams has resulted in larger file sizes, but actually *decreased* image quality.

Give me better lenses, not bigger pixel counts.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm has all the low-down on the Megapixel myth. Don’t believe the hype.

  • Mike is right, and for the tiny sensors they put in phones going much further than the n95’s 5 megapixels is a terrible idea. The noise in the picture will be a big problem, especially in less than perfect lighting. I would prefer a lower resolution sensor which is better in low light situations due to the physically larger pixels recieving more light.

For a normal 6 x 4 print a 2 megapixels sensor would produce great quality, providing the lens, focus, flash etc are good quality also (which they aren’t on most phones!).
