JoikuSpot turns your Nokia into a WLAN hotspot

Image

THIS is a wicked piece of engineering:

JoikuSpot is a free mobile software solution that turns Nokia Smartphones to WLAN HotSpots.

JoikuSpot software is installed directly to the phone. When switched on, laptops and ipods can establish instant and fast wireless internet connection via smartphone’s JoikuSpot access point using phone’s own 3G internet connection.

Multiple devices can connect to JoikuSpot in parallel and seamlessly share the same 3G internet connection. JoikuSpot acts thus as an internet gateway to external WLAN devices.

I can imagine a hundred different reasons why I’d want to do this. Fantastic!

I’ve downloaded it — alas, there’s an incompatibility, I think, between my N95, T-Mobile and the fact I’m roaming. Or perhaps my Nokia is out of date. It does work though, really — really well, according to SMS Text News reader Mike.

Check it out — download it here.

  • Ewan,
It took me hours last night but I was able to get it working after lots of error messages. Try killing ALL other internet connections (including exchange) then try again. If that doesn’t work IM me and I will talk you thorough what I had to do.

  • Hmmm…worked first time for all our devices. We had a bunch of E & N-series blasting WiFi love all over the office today. Panorama would have had a fit.

Those with iPhones were doing some serious skiteing too - of the ‘Nya-nya see we got 3G speeds when mobile too now’ variety ;-)

A great effort for a Beta - all they need to do is sort out NAT or whatever stops my VPN from working, plus a user-configurable APN plus security/hidden SSID and it will be a no-brainer must-have for the S60 WiFi masses.

In pre-meeting chit-chat, ‘Would you like some WiFi’ will be the new ‘do you take sugar’.

  • Doh! I had a play earlier and I’m sure I got it running very briefly - now I just get a message saying error trying to start up. Pretty sure all other connections are killed. Any tips anyone on getting it running on the N95 8GB?

  • @Mark
Make sure ALL connections including bluetooth are turned off.
Try to connect to your data AP (not a wifi AP)
When you get declined try again from that screen
When you are declined again exit out of the App
Restart the APP and give it a go

I know this sounds crazy but it worked for me last night when testing it.
    Good Luck
