Free WiFi in UK McDonalds rocks

Free wifi!

I was walking past the McDonalds in Oxford Street, at the Oxford Circus, when I saw a ‘Free WiFi’ sticker. I’ve walked by a few other restaurants recently and been surprised by the amount of folk sat in there munching away on a Big Mac with their laptops out, browsing the web, clearly using BT Openzone or similar.

This has taken my by surprise. The last time I was in a McDonalds trying to get WiFi, it was paid-for and didn’t work (the joys of a Hartlepool existence). So things have moved on, big time. It’s an excellent move and something I’ll need to add to my consciousness whenever I want fast data.

Check out the McDonalds site for the restaurant locator:

I hate McDonalds wi-fi. I was on my latptop in downtown Montreal today, there was free wi-fi everywhere. Then I go into a McDonalds and I ask them about the wi-fi (2.99 for 30 minutes, no thank you...) there was access to 2 other free wireless networks in the restaurant, now that's just stupid!
  • it's not free in Montreal then?

I work for McDonalds Resturants Ltd. and all McDonalds should now have free Wi-Fi, (subject to functionality of equiment). We no longer use BT openzone and now use a service called "The Cloud" www.thecloud.net. This now makes McDonalds the the UK's biggest provider of free wireless internet access. The free service will benefit a broad range of McDonald's customers, from business people making a pit stop to check email between meetings to those looking for a leisurely break at the weekend to download music. In fact, a regular hotspot user who pays to log on for just an hour a week in a coffee shop could stand to save as much as £260 per year on premium WiFi charges by using McDonald's free service.
  • Thanks for that update, Jmcc! Very useful!
  • McDonalds Evangelist/PR or a dude that knows his/her stuff?
