Former prisoners/prolific offenders get text message reminders

This is a good idea.? An excellent use of the medium (so reports the Shields Gazette):

SOUTH Tyneside offenders will soon be sent text messages to remind them of their next appointments.

Probation officers in Gateshead are already texting prolific offenders and those convicted of drug-related offences to remind them of future meetings.

And from next month, the scheme, which has the backing of offenders, is to be introduced to South Tyneside and the rest of the Northumbria area.

Probation chiefs hope it will help those convicted of a crime to increase attendance at essential appointments.

I’m pleased to see that authorities are getting it.

When I read the headline I instantly had a mental image of “young offenders” getting regular text messages saying “Remember kids, be good!” and “Tsk tsk $name, what would your old gran think if she knew?”

The actual implementation seems to be much more useful :)

I thought putting 'appointment reminders' in the headline didn't look right!

This is something new! Read about tons of mobile marketing on politics, businesses, and entertainment, I must say this is interesting and a clever idea. No room for any excuses now.

Some GP surgeries and hospital clinics are doing the same thing. I get reminders of appointments from my local clinic, and they've even started giving you test results by text, although the system seems to be faulty as they often aren't received. Definitely a step in the right direction though.
