WalkingHotspot now live and ready to use

I’m pleased to see that WalkingHotSpot is now live. It was back in April that I used the beta version of WalkingHotSpot to post a few blogs using my mobile data connection and my laptop.

I really like the utility of being able to get a WiFi connection from my handset — wherever I am (and as long as I have mobile reception). It’s like carrying a penknife. Or a second laptop battery. Or a backup USB broadband stick. Reassurance.

You know when you absolutely positively have to get an internet connection to your laptop and the WiFi in Starbucks isn’t working? This is when you want a facility like this.

Provided you’ve got a fairly decent Nokia with WiFi capabilities — or some HTC devices — you’ll be able to use it.

If you haven’t tried it out, it’s worth playing with. You can get a 7 day free trial or buy a month’s usage from WalkingHotSpot for just $6.99. Or a yearly ‘pass’ for $24.99. Although be clear — you need to have a mobile data plan of sorts on your account as well.

Sign-up here.

By the way, do check-out their chief competitor, JoikuSpot — Ben did a review of them recently.

This is great – but one problem with the N95 especially is the battery life when using 3G and WiFi together is horrible. It is very easy to drain a full battery. Make sure you have some means of charging your phone to hand!

Windows Mobile seems leagues ahead in this department. The built-in Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) tool already lets you bring your mobile connection to either Bluetooth or USB. With some tweaking it can also bring it to wifi. Developer-made “ICS Control” takes this one step further by letting you connect up almost any connection on the device: wifi to bluetooth, bluetooth to USB, 3G to wifi, almost anything.

It's missing the built in USB driver from the Skypephone though.
