AT&T Hooks Up With 1-800-FLOWERS for Valentine’s Day

1800flowers
AT&T and 1-800-FLOWERS are seeing a greenish-red this year for Valentine’s Day. The largest GSM carrier in the United States has added a link to the 1-800-FLOWERS mobile shop to its MediaNET deck, as part of their ‘Cupid Goes Wireless’ campaign. AT&T subscribers can login to send their special someone a free animated flower bouquet (hopefully with a disclaimer for men that mobile flowers will not cover them for the entire holiday).

There’s also a contest to win a $50 gift pack from 1-800-FLOWERS.com. This is obviously great for 1-800-FLOWERS to have exposure on AT&T’s MediaNET homepage, as its currently the default homepage for the mobile browser on most of AT&T’s 65+million subscriber’s handsets.

Who should the Flower Fairy visit next?

flowers

As you know, every Monday (or Tuesday in some cases) the Flower Fairy, (that would be me, Krystal :) dusts off her wings and heads out to visit someone who has done something great in the mobile world.

We take care of the sending, but what we need from you is, who should I visit next? We’ve been everywhere, even recently to the one and only Stephen Fry!

If you have a suggestion for someone who has done something (or achieved something) great in the mobile industry, drop me a line - krystal@smstextnews.com and we’ll add them to our delivery list!

Flower Fairy is off to Smaato!

flowers

Hello everyone!

As Ewan mentioned yesterday, Smaato has just received $3.5 Million in funding, so we thought it only best to send them some flowers as a congrats!

Today’s bouquet is on it’s way to CEO Ragnar Kruse at their German office in Hamburg. Great job Smaato!

(sorry for the day delay, they took a touch longer to get to Germany!)

SMS Text News sends flowers to Stephen Fry

untitled-6

Every week we send flowers to someone in or connected with the mobile industry. No specific reason, other than because we think they’re deserving. Last week the recipient was Paul Magelli who’d just sold his company to Nokia. Previous to that, it was Hugh from mobile messaging giant, MBlox.

This week we thought comedian, writer, actor, humourist, novelist, columnist, filmmaker, television personality AND mobile geek, Stephen Fry, deserved a visit from the SMS Text News Flower Fairy!

He outed himself as a 100% Class-A geek last September with this post on his newly introduced blog dissecting the apparent magnificence of the Apple iPhone. I’m a huge fan — and was thus delighted to find that he was thoroughly well informed when it came to wireless and technology issues. The post was so well received that The Guardian newspaper phoned him up and they’ve now got him writing on technology each week (”Welcome to Dork Talk“, definitely worth a read).

On my post back in September announcing this, I posed the following questions that I was going to see if I could pitch to his agent for an answer. After a lot of reading of Stephen’s blog, I think I’ve got the answers though…!

1. What was your first mobile handset — I’m willing to bet it was a car phone or something like that. One of the first, too.
2. What is your current mobile handset — and why [I'm reasonably confident he's on an iPhone, although from his blog, it's clear he's trying a lot of different handsets regularly. Good man]
3. Which network provider do you use? What’s your current device strategy? — I suspect his iPhone is AT&T, based on his blog comments.
4. Out of every handset you’ve owned, which has been your favourite? — Must be the iPhone
5. What do you use your handset for? Calling/texting/data…? — I reckon he’s a prolific user of most handset functions — particularly given his recent blog post, Chasing the perfect smartphone.

The Flower Fairy flies again next week. If you’ve got a suggestion for someone in and around the industry who you reckon deserves flowers, email me — and we’ll take care of it.

Today’s flowers are off to Jote Bassi of Anam, he was anonymously nominated this week to receive them.

“Jote has been with Anam now for just over 6 months and has done a great job and launching them into the market and making them known. He has successfully raised Anam’s profile and through that generated a number of very strong leads for the company.”

And also we’re told that he’s picked up a bit of an injury being the All Star athlete that he is, so we’re hoping these cheer him up a bit.

Flower Fairy flys today…

flowers

Today the flower fairy is on her way to Amy at Vodafone. Amy insisted she didn’t want flowers for simply doing her job, but we thought she deserved them anyway. As well, we’ll be making a small donation in her honour.

Great job Amy!

Flower Fairy on her way to Sarah Bedwell of MustardPR

flowers

Hello again everyone! It is I, Krystal, your resident Flower Fairy with this weeks delivery.

Today’s flowers are on their way to Sarah Bedwell of MustardPR, she was very kindly nominated by Adam who had these kind words to say

Ever since I joined MUSTARD PR in July 2006, Sarah has been tremendous support. This is my first full-time job so I obviously had lots of reservations. Sarah made me feel very welcome and there was never anything too trivial for me to ask her – she would, and still does, always make time for me.

Sarah is very hard-working and her enthusiasm for our clients has a profound effect on the rest of the team because we all know that we are a team and we all look out for each other. This is shown by the great results we collectively achieve, for example, the WJMC poker tournament we hosted on Thursday night.

I don’t think I have ever seen Sarah in a bad mood and despite the fact she has to travel 55 miles to work every morning, which usually includes being stuck in traffic on the M4, she always has a smile on her face! This is definitely a rarity in our industry.

I really think Sarah deserves a visit from the flower fairy because it would be a great way for me to show how grateful I am for all her support and hard work and I think she deserves to be treated for her kindness. If it wasn’t for Sarah I don’t think I would have fitted in quite so well.

Congratulations Sarah! Well deserved!

Flower Fairy flies to Ben Holmes of Index Ventures

flowers

Good morning everyone! Krystal the resident Flower Fairy with this week’s flower delivery. Today they are on their way to Ben Holmes of Index Ventures.

Everyone knows Index Ventures.
Whether it’s FON, Last.fm, Skype or RebTel, they’re all over the mobile industry.

Ben himself has been nominated by an anonymous SMS Text News reader (their company is in super-quiet stealth mode at the moment).

Mr Anonymous immediately suggested Ben as the Flowers recipient this week describing him as a solid chap:

“Ben always makes himself available, particularly at Second Chance Tuesdays and Open Coffee Mornings, to answer questions and give advice to those he meets. He’s enormously patient, extremely knowledgable and always gives fantastic replies.”

Here’s Ben’s profile at Index Ventures.

Congratulations Ben!

The Flower Fairy Flys…

flowers

Hello all!

Krystal, the resident Flower Fairy, here again with this week’s recipient.

Today’s flowers are rushing towards Barbara Webb, PA to ROK’s Chairman Jonathan Kendrick.

Barbara was nominated with these lovely words:

Maybe our very own Barbara Webb - ‘The Lovely Barbara’ (as she is know) - should be nominated?

Barbara has been PA to ROK’s Chairman, Jonathan Kendrick, for 5 years.

Always unflappable, charming, organised and polite.

Great job Barbara! We hope you enjoy your flowers.

Ross Elmsly of Sybase365 gets this week’s flowers!

flowers

Hello! It’s Krystal here with apologies for the Flower Fairy being delayed this week, apparently if you’re not sending actual flowers you can’t get same or next day delivery, and the bank holiday put me a day behind to begin with.

On that note…

Today’s flowers (actually, we chose chocolates this week) are on their way to this week’s good guy, Ross Elmsly of Sybase365. He was nominated with these kind words by John Maynard over at Vodafone:

Do you know Ross Elmsly from mobile365? Vodafone run Aggregator forums every quarter, giving our customers a chance to get face to face with the product mangers looking after the wholesale stuff, and to chat to each other. They are always well attended and people enjoy them.

At the latest one, there was a draw for a chance to be scared whitless in a fast car by Lewis Hamilton - Ross won the draw.

Thanks John!

Enjoy your flowers chocolates Ross!

Flower Fairy Delayed…

Due to the Bank Holiday, the Flower Fairy is a bit delayed this week, stay tuned!

SMS Text News flowers problem

We’ve had a wee bit of a problem with sending flowers this morning. Krystal and I have been hunting high and low for the address of this week’s recipient. It appears, alas, that I think we’re going to actually have to phone them and ask them for their address.

How boring, eh? It won’t be that much of a surprise for them!

The Flower Fairy Flys Again!

flowers

After thinking I was grounded, I have managed to get this week’s flowers off after all!

Today’s flowers are on their way to Helen Keegan, a.k.a TechnoKitten of BeepMarketing, Swedish Beers, you name it she’s done it! fame. Helen was thoughtfully nominated with these kind words

“Friendly, reliable and all round good lass Helen has been an absolute gem to me and those around me since I met her.

Either through blog activities, networking events, standing up for the female voice in the industry, putting people in their place, helping out with advice for anyone in the industry who asks for it (and sometimes to those who don’t!) Helen is known throughout the industry for her consistency, knowledge-base and well-formed opinions.
Always on hand to assist and never afraid to speak her mind - ‘Technokitten’ is someone who would be sorely missed if she ever decided to pursue a different carreer path!”

We hope you like your flowers Helen and keep up the great work!

P.S. BIG thanks to my secret helper this week! You’ve earned your wings ;)

P.P.S. We’re always looking for nominations for people to send flowers too, if you know someone in the mobile industry who you think is deserving drop us a line with the reason for your nomination, and if you happen to have an address for the person, or at least what office they work out of, please please add that on :)
