iPhone
This post is part two of this little tale of ineptitude and disappointment from the front lines of the iPhone 3G release.
Once I got back to the SMS Text News office I rang Ewan who was still in Ireland after the Unlimited Drinks event in Dublin. I also spoke to my friend Jonathan who told [...]
“Thanks, but I don’t want a free one, I think I’d rather report on the purchasing experience as a consumer”. These words haunted me for most of yesterday and I don’t think I’ll find myself saying them again soon.
As you saw from my live videos (powered by the excellent Qik) I spent yesterday morning embedded [...]
This was posted (reasonably anonymously, i.e. the chap doesn’t have a Disqus profile) by ‘Colin’ on an earlier iPhone-related post. I felt it deserved airing to the wider readership thus:

Someone please help me out here, ’cause I’m on the verge of giving up. I’ve tried - really - to [...]
Has anyone phoned up their respective operators today to cancel or change their number to a new o2 iPhone 3G? I’m really interested to garner viewpoints on how the other UK operators are reacting to the launch.
One reader I talked to — who works for a UK operator — was privately horrified to find [...]
So I was just sitting here at my “day job”, typing away when one of my colleagues said “why would you even want an iPhone?”
My ears perk up.
“Why do you say that?” I ask.
“Well it’s silly, it’s only 3 gig. iPod’s are more then that, you can’t do much with only 3 gig.”
and I said [...]
Alrighty,
Whatley here - I just got a call from our man on the street, Dan Lane -
(that’ll be the new version of Nokia PC Suite)
Bless Dan… I almost feel sorry for him.
After hearing that the Apple Store might have some iPhones to sell - our hero decamped to Regent Street to see what he could [...]
The hysteria is truly here. From the young chap Jonathan observed getting nailed by his bosses for standing in the iPhone queue, to our very own Dan Lane, currently dashing across Oxford Street from SMS Text News Towers because a rumour he picked up states the Apple Store has iPhones in stock.??Ruuuuuuuuuun!??When the gadgetlust [...]
Continue ReadingThank you to reader Jonathan who emailed to say there were about 100 people outside the o2 store in the city of Reading, when he got there at 7am this morning. ??Toby (changed his name) emailed to say he was mobbed opening his o2 store ’somewhere in the South East’ (he couldn’t be more [...]
Continue ReadingThe queues are growing on Oxford Street, continuing coverage over on my Qik page
Jason Bradbury from Channel 5’s Gadget show was on-hand to work the crowd and was officially the first person into the store (with an impressive roll under the half-close shutter) shortly followed by yours truly (with a much less elegant [...]
While we’ve heard multiple horror stories of O2 cocking up web pre-orders, I’ve not heard a peep from anyone ordering their iPhone 3G from Carphone Warehouse’s website. In fact, it claims that both the 8 and 16GB models are still in stock for new contracts (pop back on the 11th for upgrades, apparently).
While we’re on [...]
Pity poor Lauren of Sonus PR. She’s just got a text message from o2 telling her that her new iPhone will be ‘couriered’ to her tomorrow morning. ??The only trouble is, Lauren was told yesterday - by o2 - that her original web order didn’t go through. She got an order number but the actual [...]
Continue ReadingJust had a text from O2 with a link to information on iPhone 3G availability and an apology (at the bottom) over the launch shambles (of sorts)…. Here’s the key bits that confirm some of the other reports we’ve seen about stock:
O2 and Carphone Warehouse (CPW) stores will have limited numbers of iPhone 3G this [...]
Continue ReadingSamantha K is a regular SMS Text News reader. She’s an atypical reader — that is, she doesn’t work for a mobile operator, mobile marketing firm — in fact, she doesn’t work in any mobile related fields. In fact she doesn’t work at all. She’s 16 and a High School student here [...]

Rogers Communications Inc. has thrown a bone to potential iPhone customers by offering a limited-time promotional data rate plan that should silence complaints about Canadian pricing for the eagerly-anticipated device.
The wireless giant said today it would give iPhone subscribers who sign up before Aug. 31 the option of [...]
After all the cafuffle over the Rogers price plans, and rumours that Apple isn’t happy with Rogers, now comes word that Apple isn’t going to be selling the iPhone in the Apple stores.

Apple Inc. will not be selling the hotly awaited iPhone in its [...]
GFK NOP have done a piece of research that, in summary, reports the following key points relating to the (in some cases, new) iPhone:
- 16 per cent of prepay users would consider taking the new handset on a contract
- One in five mobile owners are interested in purchasing the new handset
- A further 7 per [...]
As the storm dies down here’s what we know:
O2 are sold out of all iPhone 3Gs online.
There are no white 16GB models to be offered from launch.
The PAYG version won’t be launching any time soon - possibly not until Christmas.
Carphone Warehouse are selling new connections on-line, but upgrades must be done by phone or in-store. [...]
Within hours of accepting pre-orders for the iPhone 3G the O2 site is already reporting that the 16GB Black version is unavailable. But where was the white one?
As we saw in Steve Jobs’ keynote, buyers of the 16GB iPhone 3G were supposedly going to get to choose black or white finishes and in episode 12 [...]
If you’ve been reading Ben’s tale of woe trying to register to get a 3G iPhone from o2, earlier, then this piece of news is, as Kylie used to sing, especially for you.
Carphone Warehouse, the nation’s behemoth mobile phone retailer, is ready and waiting to take your orders online, right now at www.carphonewarehouse.com/iphone.
If, incidentally, you’d [...]
…well so far. Possibly.
Yes that’s right, the usual launch day farce:
0700: E-mail customers announcing you open for business in 1hr.
0800: Don’t open.
0815: Open.
0845: Slow to a crawl before completing a transaction.
0910: Switch to ‘failover’ plain-styled registration page.
0920: Error on submission of the order.
0922: Don’t bother erroring, just re-load the order page on submission.
Genius.
…and before you [...]
In addition to making upgrades available today, O2 are also selling the iPhone 3G online to new customers for delivery by courier on the 11th July and activation at home. See the online O2 store.
Continue ReadingBetween 7am and 7:30am this morning (well for me anyway) O2 sent text and e-mail messages to customers who had registered an interest in upgrading announcing the upgrade shop would open from 8am… it started working from about 8:15.
Of course it’s hung half-way through the process (20 mins so far and counting) and started with [...]
First mentioned in Podcast 11, Ruined iPhone, the Canadian protest site against Roger’s iPhone price plans, and other unfair phone pricing has reached 40,430 signatures.
That’s great! Canadians keep it going please! You have until July 11 to sign it, when they’ll present it to Rogers.

The device will run on Rogers third-generation, or 3G, network and will cost either $199 or $299 with a 3-year contract, depending on memory size.
The iPhone will only be available with the purchase of a monthly voice and data plan, with the cheapest priced at $60 a month for 400 [...]
In Australia, it looks like three of the four main mobile operators are getting the iPhone: Optus and Vodafone have got the official nod, and Telstra is rumoured to be announcing a deal soon. Who’s left out? 3. Despite its best efforts to get the device on its inventory, there’s still no deal in the [...]
