Vodafone’s recruiting for it’s Online Business Unit

Image

Got this from the Netimperative newsletter. There’s a little ad on the right hand of the newsletter containing this text:

At Vodafone we’re about to launch a brand new Online Business Unit that will turn this area of our business into a market-leading star. The plans and backing are all in place.

Now, we’re on the search for a team of experts to propel the project forwards.

But don’t take our word for it – hear more from the internet itself at www.vodafone.co.uk/webspeak

Could be good, especially if you’re on the hunt for a new project yourself.

Here’s what they’re looking for:

Strategy Development and Finance Governance
Here, you’ll use your financial expertise to support the management team in monitoring our performance and making sure the whole team meet and beat financial targets. You’ll work with plans and budgets and influence business cases.

Commercial Development
Giving deal support to OBU, you’ll forge commercial relationships and open up new revenue streams. You’ll also oversee our existing third-party partnerships and future deals to ensure we keep to the letter of the law and further our business vision.

Portal
Driving the strategic direction of co.uk to ensure Vodafone delivers a continuous, industry leading Portal experience to customers. You’ll be as switched on as I am - providing customers with choice and a really fantastic journey so that all their needs are met speedily and efficiently.

Pricing Analysis and Propositions
You’ll be our champion of pricing best practice and support the OBU research team models by designing new pricing plans for initiatives including tariffs, new product pricing and online services.

Online Marketing
Taking ownership, you’ll manage the delivery of KPIs that ensure our commercial and strategic objectives are achieved.

Online Marketing (Planning)
Setting and tracking marketing targets, you’ll make sure OBU delivers value across the company. That will involve designing the best possible marketing strategy and ensuring delivery against the plan.

Product Management
It will be up to you to make sure we don’t just meet customer needs; we surprise them with products and services that nobody else in the market place can offer. You’ll make sure that together, we implement Vodafone’s plans smoothly and build a stable platform for future developments.

Very exciting.

Check out this page here for the introduction and more details. You’ll also notice an EXCEEDINGLY lame piece of introduction text — “Hello, it’s me, the internet”

It’s written as though it’s the internet talking to you. For a moment I was elated — I thought perhaps the Managing Director of the Online Business Unit might have stuck his/her head above the parapet and posted the introduction. A demonstration of independent thought, perhaps.

But no.

Some marketing chappy has knocked it up as though the ‘internet’ is writing to you.

They say my head’s in the clouds. That I’m a dreamer. That the things I talk about just can’t be done. Well, what do they know? Pleased to meet you, I’m the internet, and I know that with unbridled enthusiasm we can achieve anything we set our minds to.

Well that’s a load of shit, isn’t it.

After all, I’m working with the world’s leading telecommunications company. Vodafone does the extraordinary every day. And now it’s my time to shine.

Do they write this stuff just to WIND ME UP?

The internet IS NOT WORKING with the world’s leading telecoms company.

The world’s leading telecoms company is steadfastly avoiding the internet — that is — DATA. Vodafone’s fine if you want to visit eBay Mobile. Or check the news on BBC News mobile.

But piss off. Piss RIGHT off if you’d like to upload a photo via ShoZu. That’ll be four pounds per 1mb photo, please. Yes, you thought you’d bought the 120mb data pack. No. That’s the 120mb ‘web’ pack. There’s a difference. Stay in the Vodafone zoo and you can use up your 120mb normally. Head out to the internet and it’s an entirely different and hugely expensive cost. Hardly right, then, to have the internet writing to you, is it?

Total rubbish. Next, have a read of this delightful prose:

I’ve always worked hard. I’ve always felt valued. But now that people are spending more and more time online, it’s crucial to our commercial vision that I step up and become the site of choice in mobile telecommunications.

Oh please.

PLEASE stop.

“Become the site of choice in mobile communications?”

Tell me now that Vodafone isn’t trying to create yet another on-deck-but-online homepage? I hope not…………..

So I’m looking for experts in Strategy and Business Planning, Marketing, Portal and Product Management to take the lead in a totally new Online Business Unit in Newbury. A broader team who can give me more than a facelift. Who will create a hub where people try and buy the latest products and services, pay bills, network and, well, do anything we put our minds to.

Give me “more than a facelift?”

Geez, yes. It’s a hub. Oh dear.

You never know, perhaps it will all change. Maybe they’ll extend unlimited web to mean unlimited data too.

We want you to think big. We want you to think bravely. And create your own piece of history by leaving your mark on me and making sure I become the market leader.

I’m

ok

Speechless.

Here’s hoping this Online Business Unit is actually going to do some interesting and exciting things. Stay positive, MacLeod!

Charles Damen joins gaming company, End2End

One of the founders of Mobileway, Charles Damen, has recently joined the managed gaming service company, End2End.

Just in case you haven’t come across End2End recently, here’s a bit about them:

End2End enables operators to dramatically increase revenues by reducing the complexity of creating sophisticated mobile games offerings or other mobile content delivery services. End2End’s outsourced solutions enables operators to create more in-depth and loyal relationships with their most profitable customers.

Charles joins as VP of Business Development. I’m going to try and hook up with him to find out more about End2End — I’ve been hearing good things about them.

Full time blogger required at SMS Text News

I need some help — a lot of help, actually. I’m drowning in email and it’s winding me up. Hugely. Because each email is a tip, an announcement or a piece of news that I need to get published here on SMS Text News in an organised fashion.

I need someone who has the skill to take a piece of news, pick out the interesting parts with relevant quotes if appropriate and then publish it. Further, they need to be ready for an avalanche of emails forwarded from me containing stuff to review and publish.

Location isn’t important; neither is age, sex or creed. I’d draw the line at someone who carries a 5 year old Motorola in a hip holster as their primary handset though. A good grasp of English and the abolity to spot mistakes is importint; so is an awareness of the mobile industry.

Can you recommend anyone I should be speaking with?

If you’d like to discuss, can you drop me an email (ewan@smstextnews.com) or get me on IM (ewansms @ googlemail.com, ewanjmacleod via Skype).

Mobile Titan, Laurence Alexander, takes the CEO job at ROK

laurence alexanderWhen you’re preparing for substantial and signficiant investment, or the likes of an IPO, there’s a few things you have to do. Sort out your legals, get your old shareholders in line, make sure everyone’s got their option agreements to hand — and get a decent CEO to take you to the next level.

That’s not to cast a shadow on the outgoing CEO, no, not at all. It’s recognising that zero-to-a-few-million requires a particular set of qualities — a-few-million-to-Millions requires an entirely different set of qualities. For mobile television pioneer ROK, this set of requirements comes in the form of Mobile Titan, Laurence Alexander.

The news release I got through from ROK describes Laurence as a Mobile Heavyweight. Entirely accurate, given his pedigree at o2 and more recently, as CEO of mobile handset manufacturer, Emblaze.

Laurence was the chap who was responsible for bringing Blackberry to the UK via o2. For that, I upgraded his status in my eyes from Mobile Heavyweight to Mobile Titan. Blackberry changed my business lifestyle forever.

A quick ROK refresher:

Formed in 2003, ROK Entertainment Group currently employs 150 staff worldwide and has, to date, been privately financed. ROK has filed more than 40 patent applications for a suite of mobile technologies it has developed ranging from unicast mobile TV streamed over 2.5G, 3G and Wi-Fi networks through to content-loaded memory cards and mobile VoIP and content applications.

ROK is about to do an IPO through a share exchange with US publicly listed company CyberFund, Inc. (CYFD) so on the back of what they’ve already achieved, they’ll be going through the roof shortly.

The obligatory Mobile Titan quote from Laurence:

“I’ve been amazed and impressed at all that Jonathan and the team at ROK has achieved over the past three or four years and I’m delighted to be joining the company at this exciting time” said Alexander. “We’ll be looking to consolidate our position as a world leader in the provision of mobile entertainment services and applications through partnerships with handset manufacturers and mobile operators around the world”.

We’re expecting great things, Laurence :D No pressure!

And if you end up as Sales Director, I’ll carry your briefcase, right?

Mobile technology artists & art required

Link: large company looking to sponsor artists for one off event.

If you know anyone who’s dabbled in a bit of mobile technology related art and/or creativity, it might be worth asking them to contact this Craigslist poster. There’s a big multinational with, one imagines, flippin’ great wads of cash, ready to help bring your concept into reality.

I work for an agency who is working on behalf of a large multinational technology company looking to host an exhibit of interesting contemporary/digital/multimedia events/pieces or installations in the UK later this year.

While this brief sounds vague, truth is we are looking to hear from a wide range of people who would like to be given space/money to exhibit their work.

This may be:
1) People who have ideas they would like to implement.
2) People who have work they would like bought or hosted.
3) People who have work they have exhibited but would like to display again.

Ideally you will have a track record or some other way to demonstrate credibility and substance, but the main criteria will be the quality of the idea.

The most important thing is that these are ideas or works based on either the notion of communication or looking at the world in a new way.

The pieces must be pioneering, have some element of technology and be able to be exhibited somehow in a physical manner.

Example ideas we are chasing up are: Maps of peoples’ movements generated by signals from their mobile phones, technology that changes photos taken into sound.
