Brand interaction at a consumer level is already upon us.

How long it will take to hit critical mass is the question..

Nope. I'm on it, and it's fun as a diversion. If it ever reaches the critical mass that facebook has or myspace had, it will be a great, low maintenance way of keeping up with friends and acquaintances.

Why on Earth would I use it for business? If I wanted something easy to set up, cost effective, easy to access, I'd use IRC or NNTP. I could be a bit web 2.0 and run MediaWiki. Or go all enterprisey and use IBM's Teamrooms.

Same question goes for Jaiku. It's a fun social tool - it has some place in formal business, sure - but I'm not going to micro-blog "Working on Project Neptune (Vodafone's top secret plan to sell branded underwear - don't tell O2) anyone got a tape measure?".

Ricky, good question:

I have two phones in front of me: 1.1.4 iPhone and a 20.xxx N95 8GB (with rotating screen - ooooh). In current form, I'll take the iPhone for just about every occasion.

The biggest thing is the touch browser. It's all about the internet, and the browser is just light-years better. If the N95 had the same touch screen and quick zoom rendering of pages I'd use that most of the time. I'd suffer the Nokia media player (the podcast manager would free me from iTunes - hooray!) and using the camera/web uploader I'd get just as much Flickring done as I do with the iPhone/Pushr.

I'd miss threaded SMS, but would probably learn to live with Nokia Conversations. eMail is good enough (not great). Photo browsing is now nicer with the memory improvements ad auto-rotate.

For me, Killer = browsing.

Cheers,

Mike

It's all well and good giving a phone the "iPhone Killer" title if it has better specs, but what about actually using the phone?

We've got an N82 in the office, and I hate using it. I really can't stand the S60 OS. That's not to say I wouldn't like it if I used it regularly.

However, the iPhone has a nice and easy to use UI. Until I can use another phone without getting frustrated, there's no chance of it ever being an "iPhone Killer"...

Simon's last blog post..Bad mobile marketing

@Mike - seems to me that the N95 currently offers those things that you've listed, so why would you not consider it not an 'iphone killer', by that definition?

I'm not seeking to say the iPhone sucks or anything, I intended this to be an honest question, and I appreciate the honest, non-fanboy answers.

what will make android so popular is the fact that if you don't like a component in the system you can rip it out and write your own.

is the phone book application rubbish? write your own.

want your home screen to show more data and have a search box that searches your entire device? write your own.

the iPhone is not a product per say, it is more like an experience sold to you.

android is a box of crayons, the possibilities of what you can create are endless. yes there will be shit, lots of it, but on the other end of the spectrum there will be art so beautiful and new it will sweep an industry by storm.

this is why i'm buying the first Android device to be released, no questions asked.

i don't see how hard it would be. the government would basically have to mail out voter registration cards with one of those lottery type scratch off do-hickeys. you send an SMS to a government computer and it asks for your code to authenticate, you rub that sucker out, send them an SMS back, they give you a conformation and bada-bing you vote for the guy with the nice haircut and straight teeth.

I think you may have been misinformed - I took out a 3uk subscription at the same time. I also downgraded a few weeks ago beause I wasn't using it that muh anymore. I am pretty sure the admin charge was £25 rather than £50. I cancelled the Xseries silver package completely, leaving me with just £25 per month for the next few months. It isn't that awful bearing in mind I might be able to flog the n73 I got for free at the outset for about £50-£75.

Absolutely. I would pay a monthly fee for Twitter service. Without blinking twice.

I think that newcomers would not though. Most folks don't "get" Twitter until they have tried it and become addicted. So, it would have to have a free trial period and some sort of education and evangelizing to get people using it.

Did you ask them if they had got their contract CAC's worth out of you yet?

Might require an outside-the-square solution, methinks a bit of rough'n'tumble with disconnections/retentions might be in order chap.

Worked for me with Vodafone ;-)

...and how is the mobile industry any different to any other industry?

Other suggested titles for 'The Great <insert here> Rip-Off':

Coffee at any London train station
Petrol
Bottled Water
Matches
DVD
Champagne
Crocs
Hotel WiFi (Ups Dean Bubley in Da Grumpy House yaaaaa)
AnythingmadebyNike/Reebok/etcetc

Panorama lost me after the complete trainwreck of a WiFi story last year. When I was growing up Panorama was a byword for integrity. Now, they are just anoter News of The World.

The industry will shrug. meh.

I agree Mark -- I think the market dynamics are doing the job (perhaps not as quickly as I'd like)

I have to agree, Ewan. I've dealt with these programmes on behalf of clients and no matter how fair and honest the business actually is, you know you're just going to be on the end of a hatchet job. Pertinent balancing material is ditched or sidestepped with a single comment, while otherwise innocuous details are blown up with dramatic graphics. That said, the mobile industry could still do with pulling its boots up on customer service and some of the more ridiculous charging - I just don't think any TV 'investigation' (gimme strength!) is going to help that cause.

HSPA - so I'm not wedded to WiFi when out.

SiRFStar III or better GPS - so the location apps are that much more accurate

A2DP Bluetooth. So I can loose the tangle. And share the audio love. Stream to your friend's iPod/iPhone, anyone?

WiFi syncing - So I can loose the dock.

>2MP camera. Duh.

Apart from that, I'm stuck. After using one for 6 months every day, maybe it's hard to think of something truly new, instead of improvements to existing functions or obvious omissions that are in other devices, like the N95.

But maybe the success is in the simplicity. Let's not be afraid to credit Apple with building a seminal device that may well go essentially unimproved for the next 5 years. Maybe it will take something like mind/eye control, or fuel cells, or some other nascient technology to become mainstream before it could be applied, and the 'iPhone killer' moniker justly won.

For others to replicate the iPhone and bolt on the above list would *for me* be 'killer', and I have no problem with that - especially at a better price. A copy/clone with the above list is still a better device IMHO, and I'd buy one.

Let's remember - Apple didn't invent the GUI, or trackpads. They just applied them to existing apps/hardware in a new way.

Yes. Average speeds are better and consumers prefer providers to be upfront.

Ricky: An iPhone 'killer' simply has to be a product that makes the iPhone look like a dead end, or just 'dead'! In much the same way that the iPhone made the current D-pad and numeric keypad/qwerty combo look like a dead end.

What form this may take is anybodies guess, but I wouldn't mind betting that the first company to produce an effective iPhone killer will be Apple themselves...

Nokia need to aim for something *beyond* the current iPhone, or they'll have no chance of catching up.
